A jade haircomb

春秋 白色玉梳

Combs of this form, with semi-circular handles, often decoratively pierced, are typical of the combs found in tombs of the latter part of the Eastern Zhou period.  They are found in a number of different materials apart from jade, including bone, bronze, bamboo and stone.  Of these jade combs, like this one, would have been the most appropriate for members of the nobility.  It is probable that this type of comb is designed to be worn in the hair.
