A large Longquan celadon "twin-fish" dish

元  龍泉窯雙魚紋大盤

The dish is of stoutly potted open form, with a steep curved well swiftly incised with scrolling foliage, rising to a sharply everted rim.  The flat central field is decorated in applied technique with a pair of moulded appliques of circling fish, with large heads, forked tails and clearly indicated rows of scales. The whole is applied with a superb glaze of bluish sea-green colour, pooling slightly darker in the recessed areas of the decoration. The reverse has carved radiating lotus petals, encircling the deep countersunk foot with unglazed footrim showing the fine-grained grey body.
