A Dingyao carved lotus-pattern bowl

北宋晚期   定窯刻蓮花紋花口盌

The bowl is finely potted with rounded sides rising to a rim lightly divided by shallow notches into six lobes.  A design of scrolling lotus, with large blossoms and slender stems, is deftly carved to the interior with a double-bladed tool. A circle is impressed in the centre of the bowl. The whole is applied with a fine ivory-white glaze.
